Can you replace siding on a pre-1940 house?
Yes, but the wall underneath decides the job. Older houses may have original wood clapboard, stucco or earlier siding layers, and out-of-plumb walls, so we check the sheathing, trim and window details before pricing. In a historic district, the municipality's review applies to siding changes too, so check that first.
Materials we offer
Fiber cement
Boards from makers such as James Hardie or CertainTeed. Takes paint and can mimic wood clapboard.
Vinyl
Lower cost and low upkeep; less convincing on a house with deep wood trim.

Siding questions
Do I need historic approval for new siding?
Thinking about new siding?
Tell us where the house is, how old the roof is and what it is doing. If you have photos, say so and we will ask for them by email. Outside our core area? Send the form and ask.
We answer form requests Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. There is no phone line, so the whole conversation stays in writing.
